Please Note: the actions to open UML diagrams in the newest release of green have been moved to the bottom of the context menu.

The newest version of green, 2.5.0 RC2, has been posted on SourceForge. It uses the following configuration:

  • Eclipse 3.2M5
  • GEF 3.1.1
One major advantage of this version over previous versions is that organize imports is automatically performed after adding or removing a relationship, removing the annoying warnings that occurred as the result of unnecessary imports.
12/13/05

The new version has been released. It's an alpha version, so handle with care, especially the newer features. Please report any bugs you find.

11/05/05

A download/install section has been added to our site (click the "Download" button on the left) to help with common install issues. If you're having a problem getting green to work in Eclipse, consult that section. There's a link on that page to post a support request if you're still having problems.

green 2.5.0 will be released on 12/12/05. This is three days after the due date for our students' last lab.

As promised, the dependency relationship now recognizes a couple different kinds of dependencies in code. Relationship arcs will display the relationship subtype's name (e.g. Instance or Local Variable for the new Dependency). When you click the Dependency palette tool, a context menu will be displayed, asking which type of dependency you'd like to create.

Printing is now available. The menu has been simplified a lot. Certain features have been removed. The "hide" option has been completely removed. Many of the features have been removed due to duplication in other menus (e.g. print, save as JPEG - use Save As). By the way, you can now save and load files using the entire file system, not just the Eclipse workspace.

Javadoc tooltips are now available while hovering over a field, method, or type. There's a preference you'll have to set to enable them.

A couple more plans for implementation: the ability to select methods in which to create certain relationships, the ability to incrementally explore along a single kind of relationship, the ability to do quick fixes in green's editor, and a better layout when loading classes into the diagram.

10/12/05

green's source and Eclipse plugins/features are available on the downloads page.

green will be featured at OOPSLA 2005 in San Diego.

10/04/05

green development is being postponed until the end of OOPSLA '05 and will resume 10/21/05.

Features planned for the next release include:
  • Extension of code recognized by association relationship
  • Multiple semantic options for dependency relationship.
  • Javadoc tooltips while hovering over class members.

9/30/05

We seem to have a stable low-bug release of green: v2.4.0.

Motivation
green was developed with the pedagogical goal of focusing students on design. This aspect of software development has been at the heart of the university's Computer Science program for several years.
Development of green was undertaken by Alphonce and his students, and was funded by an Eclipse Innovation Grant awarded to Alphonce. Eclipse's GEF and JDT supplies much of the underlying framework.
Green is currently installed on many servers at the university for use in introductory courses. So far, it has greatly complemented our efforts. Students have been able to use the tool in ways we were unable to foresee to strengthen their knowledge of OO concepts.
With green, UML diagrams are educational and easy to create.

Design
green is a round-tripping editor, meaning that it supports both software engineering and reverse engineering. You can use green to create a UML class diagram from code, or to generate code by drawing class diagram. This is accomplished using Eclipse's Java Model and Abstract Syntax Tree, which provide the necessary data structures and tools for live representation of the static structure of Java programs. By focusing on static analysis of code, we aim to develop a tool that's very good at a specific purpose, rather than one that work with all aspects of the software engineering process.
The editor features a simple point-and-click interface. Right-clicking in the editor brings up a context-sensitive menu that includes features such as refactoring and quick fix functionality.
green is currently maintained by Dr. Carl Alphonce at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY.
